(Back to top) PYRANTEL (Antiminth®) is an anthelmintic. This medicine treats parasitic (worm) infections from trichinosis, pinworms, roundworms, or hookworms. Worms are paralyzed and then passed in the stool. Generic pyrantel oral suspension is available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •anemia or other blood disorders •dehydration •liver disease •malnutrition •an unusual or allergic reaction to pyrantel or other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I take this medicine? (Back to top) Take pyrantel oral suspension by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Pyrantel is taken as a single dose. You can take it at any time during the day. Shake well before using. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure your medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one; household spoons are not always accurate. You can take pyrantel on an empty stomach or with milk or juice. You can mix it with semi-solid food (such as applesauce or pudding), which is an easy way to give it to children. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Parasite (worm) death can be slow. To remove all parasites (worms) from the intestines can take several days. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) This does not apply as pyrantel is taken as a single dose and can be taken at any time. What drug(s) may interact with pyrantel? (Back to top) •piperazine Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. What side effects may I notice from taking pyrantel? (Back to top) Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •skin rash Call your prescriber or health care professional as soon as you can if you get this side effect. Minor side effects include: •nausea, vomiting •diarrhea •difficulty in passing a stool •headache •loss of appetite •stomach pain or stomach cramps, which can occur when large numbers of worms are present Tell your prescriber or health care professional about these side effects if they do not go away or if they annoy you. What should I watch for while taking pyrantel? (Back to top) Visit your prescriber or health care professional to check that your infection has gone. If you have a severe infection, or if any worms remain after the first course of treatment, you may need a second course 1 week later. If you have hookworms you may be anemic. Check with your prescriber or health care professional to see if you need iron supplements. If you have pinworms other people in your house may need treatment. Pinworms spread easily by close contact. Wash your hands, scrub your fingernails and shower often. Every day change and launder bedclothes, linens, and undergarments. This will help keep other family members from getting infected. Disinfect the toilet every day, and damp mop the floors often to reduce the number of worm eggs. Never eat undercooked (pink) pork meat. You can kill pork worm larvae (trichinosis) by cooking pork meat until it is well done. Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top) Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F); do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
